I ran into a problem with a clients Windows 7 Home Premium installation where after it had a virus it would not install Windows 7 SP1. I tried all the various standard solutions with no avail.
.) Ran a system backup and restore, create disk image for all disks on machine to external drive and created a system repair disk
.) Run Startup Repair, then try installing SP1- failed
.) Run Startup Repair, then try installing SP1 standalone installer - failed
.) Run sfc /scannow, then try installing SP1 - failed
.) Run sfc/scannow, then try installing SP1 standalone installer - failed
.) Finally, completed an in place upgrade from a windows 7 upgrade CD, entered serial number on bottom of machine, and ran an upgrade install. - all updates with the exception of the SP1 update worked... so still failed
.) ran http://hacksys.byethost2.com/winupdate/windows-update-troubleshooter-v1-3.html windows update troubleshooter - failed
.) Called Microsoft they collected some diagnostic information from the sony vaio laptop and suggested that I simply do a clean install. -- FAIL
I'm not happy about this one.. Hopefully they figure something out with the data to prevent this issue in the future.
