Windows XP SP3 System Repair CD Rom Drive Not Recognized GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386 not found

When attempting an Repair Install of Windows XP SP3 the CDROM is not longer available or recognized on the first reboot of the setup installation. A message window is displayed with the path GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386 which does not exist.

The method that worked for me was to copy the i386 folder from the cd to the C: drive on the targeted computer. Then when the installer prompts for the directory path above instead add in C:\i386 instead. You may need to do this many times so use the copy/paste key combinations (ctrl+c, ctrl+p) to make it easier. Then click on OK each time you are prompted.

This worked for me hope it helps you.

Program shortcut that requires UAC permission

Hi,
I had a customer that just updated to Windows 7. He had shortcut on his desktop that launched an application on a mapped network drive. Everytime he launched the program the UAC window came up and prompted him to indicate whether it was ok or not to run the program on the mapped drive. Very annoying.. So I found this interesting article on how to create a shortcut with an elevated prompt using task scheduler. Nifty. It helped me hopefully it helps you as well.

MSI BigBang XPower Raid 5 Setup Intel Matrix Storage

So you want to setup RAID 5 on your new BigBang XPower board? Pretty hard to find the documentation to do this. After a couple of hours, this is what I found to make it work.

1. Download new Intel drivers via the Control Center
2. I also found the live update for MSI drivers on the MSI website here: http://us.msi.com/service/download/
3. Boot into the Bios and select
4. Change the default setting of IDE to RAID
5. F10 save and exit
6. Hit Ctrl+I during boot to get into the Intel Matrix Storage RAID utility
7. Enter the volume name, select the RAID Type, Select the Disks, and stripe size (See hints at the bottom of the screen.), then build the RAID volume.

Moving Thunderbird to New Computer from old disk drive

This is a method I discovered to move a Thunderbird profile to a new Windows 7 computer from XP or other.

  1. Install Thunderbird on new computer
  2. Copy all data in profile to computer with new profile created on new computer during Thunderbird install
  3. --in XP it's  C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles)
    --in Vista and Win 7 it's C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\
  4. Run MozBackup to backup Thunderbird - Save the backup
  5. Delete all the data in the profile you just backed up on your new computer (since it is all backed up AND since you still have a copy on the old drive you will be safe if something were to flub up).
  6. Run MozBackup to restore profile to Thunderbird
  7. Open Thunderbird and you should see all your accounts and emails
Please leave comments so I know this has helped!
